The story of "The Twist" involves a friendly competition issued by the "One of a Kind" show in Toronto. They sent out a challenge to all their creative venders to create something umbrella themed for the 2012 spring show. Right away, I was asking myself how I could ever make something that would stand out next to the work of a textile vender, who could actually make an umbrella. The answer came in the simplest of advice: Do what you're best at, and the rest will take care of itself. "The Twist" is a carefree spirit. She shakes of life's rainy days and celebrates what she sees as she looks ahead.
Though "The Twist" is a part of the third wave of the feminine spirit series, her colors are reminiscent of earlier waves. What distinguishes her from earlier waves is her distinctly spring seasonal feel. Turns out, living in BC made it really easy to be inspired by umbrellas. No one knows rain, or how to keep it from letting it get you down, quite like we do.
The original piece was done using an acrylic ink paint on watercolor paper. The technique is very similar to watercolor but tends to keep more vibrant hews and dries permanently to the paper.
